Special thanks to:

- Brian Horsey whose flightdynamic was a fantastic base for our flightmodel,
- Wolfram Beckert who testet and fundamentally improved the flightdynamic,
- Dieter Ramthun (of the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation), who helped us to answer some questions on technical details of the C-54/DC-4,
- Dale DeLuca, who made some very nice repaints of classic liveries for our DC-4.

WEIGHT TOOL

With WeightTool you can change the weight values, it works as if passengers get in/ out or the aircraft became fuel. Before every flight the specific weight of the DC-4 can be changed. WeightTool works by editing the aircraft weights in the aircraft.cfg file of the DC-4.

WeightTool was installed together with the DC-4 AOA folder.
The WeightTool file (WeightTool.exe) must be in the main folder of the Douglas DC-4 AOA (the folder which contains the Aircraft.cfg file). This folder also must contains the "WeightTool.cfg" file and the "WeightToolHelp.html" file.

Please notice: This tool is only built for the FS-Design Berlin's DC-4!

How to use:
- WeightTool is started by double-click of the WeightTool.exe which is in the main folder of the DC-4 AOA (for using WeightTool start WeightToolHelp).
- WeightTool Help is started by double-click of the WeightToolHelp.html which is also in the main folder of the DC-4 AOA.

Please notice:
If you restart the Microsoft Flight Simulator the last saved weight settings are still valid.

On the plane

The Douglas C-54/DC-4 was developed under the darkening clouds of World War 2,
and upon USA's entry into the war all DC-4s then on the production line
were requisitioned for the US military. The result was that the 1st DC-4
off the production line flew in 1942 wearing olive drab camoflage as the
C-54 Skymaster. The C-54 admirably fitted into the USAAF's long range
transport role and 1162 were built through the war years.

Post war many surplus C-54s were available for airliner conversion. The
type initially formed the mainstay of most long haul passenger carriers.
An additional 78 additional DC-4s were produced by Douglas to new orders.
Eventually the type was replaced by faster, pressurised DC-6s and
Constellations. DC-4s eventually filtered down to third level operators
and freight operators.

Notable developments of the DC-4 include Aviation Trader's much modified
Carvair freighter while Canadair built a number with RollsRoyce Merlin
engines and pressurised fuselages. The DC-4 also formed the basis for the
larger DC-6 and DC-7. The C-54/DC-4 was the first airliner to introduce a
circular section, constant diameter fuselage which made stretching the basic
aircraft relatively simple).

The C-54/DC-4 was the workhorse of the Berlin Airlift 1948-49. More than 240 C-54
of the U.S. forces came here to use.

From 1945 to 1950 American Overseas Airlines used together 13 DC-4 / C-54.
90902 (ex C-54E) was used by AOA from October 1945 to September 1950 (also in the Berlin
Airlift 1948/49) when the company was taken by Pan Am. Furthermore 90902 was
used by Pan Am as Clipper London to Berlin-Tempelhof.

Powerplants:
Four 1080kW (1450shp) Pratt & Whitney R20002SDBG Twin Wasp 14 cylinder twin row
radial piston engines driving three blade constant speed propellers.

Performance:
Max speed 451km/h (244kt), cruising speed 365km/h (197kt).
Service ceiling 22,300ft. Range with a 5200kg (11,440lb) payload 4023km (2172nm).

Weights:
Empty 19,460kg (43,300lb), max takeoff 33,112kg (73,000lb).

Dimensions:
Wing span 35.81m (117ft 6in), length 28.60m (93ft10in), height 8.38m (27ft 6in).
Wing area 135.6m2 (1460sq ft).

Production:
Total DC-4 production comprised one DC-4E, 78 commercial DC-4s, 1162 military
C54 Skymasters and 42 Canadair developed Merlin powered derivatives. Almost 80
remain in commercial service, most as freighters.

VISIT FS BERLIN

The main theme of our webside is the Microsoft flight simulator (FS98/ FS2000/
FS2002) with special regards to Berlin airports - specially to Tempelhof
Central Airport but also to Gatow and Tegel). We will cover the period from
1945 until about 1990, that is, when the west part of Berlin was surrounded
by The Wall and when these airports stood under the command of the west allied
air forces (US Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force). Along with the
world-famous Berlin Airlift this is probably the most exciting period in the
history of these airports.
We want to collect as many aircraft models as possible of such original
airplanes which landed on West-Berlin airports (in this period) and list
them in a comprehensive archive. And we want to repaint such aircraft models
and offer them for downloading.
